The filament of an electric bulb is made of tungsten. An incandescent light bulb has a small thin wire with two bigger wires holding it up. Incandescent bulbs typically have a lifespan of about 1,000 hours for home use, whereas LED filament Bulbs have a lifespan of 30,000 hours.

What is a Filament and what is its function?

Generally, the filament is made up of tungsten. The tungsten filament of a vacuum incandescent lamp is heated to temperatures where visible light is emitted by resistance heating. It acts as an electrical resistor, which dissipates power proportional to the voltage applied, times the current through it.

Current uses as electrodes, heating elements, and field emitters, and as filaments in light bulbs and cathode ray tubes. Tungsten is commonly used in heavy metal alloys such as high-speed steel, from which cutting tools are manufactured.

The tungsten filament evaporates more rapidly as the temperature of the filament goes up. The evaporated particles tend to deposit on the glass envelope, causing over time, an increase in light output obstruction. Depending on the application, the light output obstruction could be high enough to end the useful life of the lamp.

Eventually, the filament material will evaporate enough to cause it to break, completely ending the life of the lamp. Both of these effects are strongly dependent on the temperature of the filament, which is why long-life vacuum lamps tend to be operated at the low end of the temperature range and the light has a yellowish appearance.

Resistivity variation and temperature of a tungsten filament

The resistance of hot tungsten filament is about 10 times the cold. For a light bulb, the resistance of the filament will change as it heats up and cools down. The specific resistance of tungsten was found to vary from 5.00×10−6 ohm-cm at 273°K to 117.1×10−6 at 3655°K.

The resistance of the tungsten element increases significantly and quickly when you first switch it on. This is due to the increase in temperature due to the current flowing through the filament.

Tungsten has a High Melting Point

Tungsten has a high melting point, high resistivity, good strength, and low vapor pressure. When the mean free path of vapor molecules is larger than the linear dimension of the vacuum chamber, the atoms and molecules of the vapor escape from the surface of the evaporation source and are rarely impacted or obstructed by other molecules or atoms.

What is the reason behind the spiral tungsten filament?
